Howard University alumnus Phillip Gyau (B.A. '87) was named head coach of the men’s soccer team in April 2014. Gyau brings more than 25 years of experience to the position as a respected coach and a former U.S. National Team Player.
After the 2024 campaign, Bryson Baker (All-NEC Second Team) and Daniil Kaban (All-Rookie Team) received NEC (Northeast Conference) postseason honors. Academically, nearly two dozen Bison made the NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
In 2023, Bryson Baker was selected to the All-NEC Second Team. Academically, nine Bison made the NEC (Northeast Conference) Fall Academic Honor Roll.
The following year (2022), Bryson Baker made the All-NEC First Team while 26 Bison earned a spot on the NEC (Northeast Conference) Fall Academic Honor Roll.
In 2021, Howard joined the NEC (Northeast Conference) where Bryson Baker was named to the league's All-Rookie Team. Academically, 19 Bison earned NEC Fall Academic honors.
In 2019, Carlos Caro and Andres Gomez were named to the Sun Belt (SBC) All-Conference First Team after guiding the club to a No. 3 seed in the SBC Tourney.
In 2018, three Bison were selected to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team: Carlos Caro (Second Team); Joel Cunningham (First Team); and Victor Guirma (Second Team). Carlos also was named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team.
In 2017, Howard reached the Sun Belt (SBC) Semifinals while seeing Kyle Celestine and Carlos Caro made the SBC All-Tournament Team. Academically, 20 Bison were named to the Sun Belt Academic Commissioner's and Honor Roll lists while winning the conference's academic team award. Also, 15 student-athletes were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner's All-Academic Team.
In 2016, he saw Kenneth Hersey earn Sun Belt All-Tournament recognition.
In 2015, Gyau witnessed Kyle Celestine selected to the Sun Belt All-Conference First Team.
Since 1998, Coach Gyau has placed 20 players on Youth National teams. He has played in six National Championships and won four of them. Gyau has several years of coaching experience. In 2007 and 2011, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) named him Coach of the Year. In 2007, Gyau was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame.
“I am so thrilled to return to Howard because it’s the place that molded me into the coach and player I am today,” said Gyau. “Howard taught me that the key ingredient to happiness and success is to never give less than your best. I am looking forward to giving back to the program that gave me so much. I will do my best to return this soccer program to prominence.”
Gyau is married to Leslie Amina Gyau. Their son, Joseph-Claude Gyau, and daughter, Mia-Irene Gyau, are both soccer players. Joe is currently a member of the United States Men's National Team.
