Hassan, Louis Combine To Lead Savannah State To Win Over Howard

Savannah, GA—January 28, 2012—Rashad Hassan scored a game-high 22 points and Arnold Louis came off the bench to record a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds to help Savannah State pull away to a 71-50 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game the Tiger Arena.

The Tigers (11-10, 6-2 in the MEAC), who held a 32-29 lead at the half, used an 18-9 run during the first eight minutes of the second half to put the game away by taking a 50-38 lead.  Hassan, Louis and Deric Rudolph led the charge by combining for 16 of the points during the spurt.  Hassan and Louis teamed to hit on 14 of 21 shots from the field for the game.

The Bison (4-17, 1-7 in the MEAC) were unable to score during long stretches and hurt themselves further with untimely turnovers during their attempts to get back in the game.

The game was tightly called by the officials and featured 49 fouls and 61 free throw attempts.  The Bison could have used their free throw shooting to get back in the game. Up until the previous game against North Carolina Central, Howard was shooting a more than respectable 70 percent from the charity stripe as a team.  But they had another subpar performance, missing 19 of 35 attempts for a season-low 54 percent.

Savannah State, which is in its first year as a member of the MEAC, registered its third straight win.  Rudolph scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Tigers.

The Bison were led by junior forward Mike Phillips, who came off the bench to score 11 points and freshman Prince Okoroh, who contributed 10.  Team leading scorer Glenn Andrews, who averages over 15 points per game, finished with four points, going 1 for 10 from the field.
