In 2012, Richard Hall joined Howard University as an assistant coach under Shaun Kupferberg’s staff after coaching together for four years at Jacksonville University. His duties include assisting in practice drills and skills, serving as team serve-receive and serving coordinator while also scouting opposing teams.

In 2025, HU went 18-11 (10-4 MEAC) and reached the MEAC Championship match for the third consecutive year. Along the way, Leah Reeves won back-to-back MEAC Setter of the Year while Rya McKinnon and Zenai Jethroe joined Reeves on the All-MEAC First Team. Alexys James made the All-MEAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team. 

In 2024, Howard went 23-6 record, including undefeated conference mark (14-0). Along the way, five Bison earned conference postseason honors: Dami Awojobi (All-MEAC Second Team); Rya McKinnon (MEAC Player of the Year); Claire Simpson (All-MEAC Second Team); Leah Reeves (MEAC Setter of the Year) and Cimone Woodard (All-MEAC First Team). Additionally, McKinnon earned AVCA All-Region honors. Academically, HU made the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.

In 2023, HU went 17-15 overall mark (11-3 MEAC) and a postseason berth to the NIV (National Invitational Volleyball) Tournament. Additionally, he saw Rya McKinnon win MEAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season while earning AVCA All-Region honors. Middle blocker Cimone Woodard and made the All-MEAC First Team while setter Kayla Diaz and libero Claire Simpson were selected to the All-MEAC Second Team.

In 2022, Howard shared of the MEAC Regular Season Title, going 20-10 overall (12-2 MEAC). In addition, he coached Rya McKinnon to MEAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors. The freshman also was named AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. Setter Kayla Diaz claimed MEAC Co-Setter of the Year and middle blocker Tamar Wells earned All-MEAC Second Team. 
 
In fall 2021, the Bison claimed its sixth MEAC Championship in seven seasons. With the historic victory, HU is now tied with Florida A&M for the most volleyball titles in MEAC history (13 total).
 
In 2008, Howard notched a program-best 20-10 record. He followed with a 19-9 mark the following year. In the process, eight of his student-athletes were named to the all-conference teams.

Prior to Howard, Hall was an assistant coach for Jacksonville University from 2008-2011 where he helped lead the Dolphins to their best record in school history. Before joining Kupferberg at Jacksonville, Hall assisted with the University of North Florida from 1996-2007 and helped with the program’s transition to Division I after dominating the Division II ranks.

During that time, the Ospreys earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament in seven out of eight years while winning the Peach Belt Conference title in all eight seasons. He also coached nine All-America honorees, 14 all-South Region selections, 24 all-conference players, six conference players of the year and four freshmen of the year.

While with the women’s team, Hall also served as head coach for the UNF men’s club team from 1999-2003.

As a player, Hall was a member of the Tidewater Volleyball Association from 1990-96. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Old Dominion in 1989 before getting his master’s in electrical and computer engineering at University of Florida in 2006.

A member of USA Volleyball (USAV) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Hall earned USA CAP Level II certification in 1995.
