Joshua Smith

The Howard University men’s golf program added Josh Smith as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in March 2025.
Smith plays a key role in recruiting, player development, practice and qualifying plans, tournament preparation, team travel and logistics, equipment management, and the day-to-day operation of the program.

During his time at Howard, Smith has helped guide the Bison to significant program success, including multiple conference championships and back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances. In 2026, Smith served as Acting Head Coach for two tournament victories, leading Howard to championships at the HCU-Colin Montgomerie Invitational and the NEC Championship, while helping the Bison earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Athens Regional.

Smith has also contributed to the success of the Howard women's program. In 2025, he stepped in to coach the Lady Bison at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, helping the team finish as runner-up.

Smith has helped develop a culture centered on accountability, competitive excellence, academic success, and professional development. His recruiting efforts have expanded Howard's presence nationally and internationally, while his player-development work has contributed to multiple All-Conference selections and Howard student-athletes advancing to professional golf, including competition on the Korn Ferry Tour.

His role also extends beyond traditional coaching responsibilities. Smith has personally caddied for Howard student-athletes in U.S. Open Final Qualifying, Korn Ferry Tour events, and Mid-Amateur competitions, providing on-course support and preparation at some of the highest levels of competitive golf.

Prior to Howard, Smith gained extensive collegiate coaching experience at the junior-college level. He helped Sandhills Community College capture the 2020 NJCAA National Championship and also coached at Midland College and Ranger College.

A native of Compton, Calif., and raised in Fayetteville, N.C., Smith played collegiate golf at Mars Hill University from 2013-15 and Sandhills Community College from 2015-17 before completing his degree at Fayetteville State University in 2019.

Smith brings a competitive background and player-development approach to his coaching, with an emphasis on preparing student-athletes to compete at the highest level while developing as complete individuals on and off the course.
