In 2017, Andrew Murphy returned home to his alma mater for a second stint with the Bison primarily coaching the distance student-athletes as well as recruiting coordinator and program operations.

Since returning to Howard, Murphy has seen eleven (11) school records fall. Along the way, he trained NCAA qualifiers Sydney Benson (2019) and Melanie White (2021), members of the 4x400 meter relay squad.

During the 2021 cross country season, Murphy led the Bison to a pair of runner up finishes at the MEAC Championships while training eight All-MEAC selections.

Although the 2020 outdoor season was canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the program had success during the cross country. Distance runners Melanie White and Gavin Williams earned All-MEAC honors at the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships. The season also saw 11 Bison named to the MEAC Cross Country All-Academic Team.

During the 2019 indoor season, Gavin Williams and Dasia Wilson each set school records in the mile run and 800-meter run, respectively.

Murphy saw Tariq Fullerton and Destiny Stanford excel during the 2018 cross country season, winning their respective events at the inaugural Howard Labor Day Classic. At the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships, Stanford earned All-MEAC honors. Academically, both squads received 2018-19 U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic honors.

During the 2017-18 season, student-athletes under Coach Murphy’s direction set three school records and earned several All-MEAC honors. 

Prior to joining Howard, Coach Murphy served as Assistant Coach at California State University East Bay where the Pioneers climbed the ranks of the CCAA. Along with serving as Meet Director for both home cross country and track and field meets, Coach Murphy successfully led Pioneer student-athletes to four all-time marks, including guiding the development of Marquise Cherry to All-American honors in the triple jump.

No stranger to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Murphy served as Assistant Track & Cross Country coach at Morgan State University. During his first season three seasons, he helped MSU student-athletes win three conference titles, set five school records, and earn 19 All-MEAC awards. In 2013-14, five of Coach Murphy's cross country runners gathered All-MEAC honors. That year, the MSU women earned an NCAA Regional Ranking and finished second at the MEAC Cross Championship, led by individual conference champion Ashley Seymour. Seymour would go on to became the first MSU runner to be named Division I National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA).

Prior to joining Morgan State, Andrew served as an assistant coach at Howard where he helped the Bison cross country team finish the top-three in the MEAC in back-to-back seasons. During his this time under his guidance, 17 student-athletes captured All-MEAC honors, led by Ashley Hodges, who won the MEAC Cross Country championship and set the MEAC Indoor Track championship record in the 5000 meters.

Before arrival to The Hilltop, Coach Murphy served as coach at Meade Senior High School in Ft. Meade, Maryland. During his tenure, the Mustangs captured three straight outdoor track state championships and two indoor state championships while guiding over 40 student-athletes to appearances at the Maryland state championships, 12 of whom captured individual titles. 

Andrew currently resides in College Park, MD and graduated from Howard with a B.A. in History.  He also holds USATF Level I and Level II coaching certifications in endurance events as well as sprints, hurdles, and relays.
