Women’s Track & Field Takes Home HBCU Indoor Championship

Bison repeat as champion

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 6, 2026) – Howard University women's track & field team took home the HBCU Indoor Championship for the second consecutive year in Louisville, Ky.
 
Overall, the Bison registered 219 points with 10 first-place votes.
 
On the track, senior Zoe Turner (Mableton, Ga.) and sophomores Cenaiya Billups (Denver), Lindsay Johnson (Detroit) and Tiffany Mugubi (Houston) capped off the day with a win in the 4x400 relay, clocking in at 3:49.09.
 
Individually, Johnson, Turner and senior Sanaa Morris (Bermuda) swept the 400-meter dash, earning first (55.50), second (56.27) and third (57.73), respectively.
 
Johnson, senior Lauren Thompson (Frisco, Texas) and rookie Carrie Vannoy (Oak Park, Mich.) also swept the 60-meter hurdles, taking first (8.56), second (8.56) and third (8.67), respectively.
 
Newcomer Nilijah Darden (Greensboro, N.C.) and juniors Yahnari Lyons (Hampton, Ga.) and Aiyana Gray-Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.) won gold (7.48), silver (7.56) and bronze (7.58), respectively, in the 60-meter dash.
 
Lyons and fellow classmate Mackenzie Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) went first (24.04) and second (24.16), respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
 
In the mid-distance, Mugubi, freshman Alexis Jones (New Windsor, N.Y.) and second-year Bison Kendall Robinson (Bowie, Md.) grabbed gold (2:13.23), silver (2:15.27) and bronze (2:23.01), respectively, in the 800-meter run.
 
In the field, sophomore Jasmen Walker (Flossmoor, Ill.) took first in a pair of events: high jump (1.58 meters) and triple jump (11.09 meters).
 
Texas natives Temi Banwo (Allen) and Kinnidi Hampton (Rowlette) claimed first (14.02 meters) and second (13.07 meters), respectively, in the shot put. Both Bison also found success in the weight throw, landing first (18.03 meters) and third (14.17 meters), respectively, on the leaderboard.
 
Central State and host Kentucky State tied for second place with 61 points.
 
On March 20-21, HU opens its outdoor seasons at the USF Alumni Invitational, hosted by the Bulls.
