WASHINGTON (October 7, 2023) – The Howard University men's swimming & diving team kicked off its first home meet Saturday afternoon at the prestigious Battle at the Burr to a packed Burr Natatorium. The Bison earned five top finishes in the 125-99 loss to Georgetown.
The Bison started off strong, claiming the first event of the afternoon. With a time of 1:31.96, the team consisting of Tristan Stevens (Chicago), Mark-Anthony Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), Taj Benton (Baltimore) and Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) swam to a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Strokes ahead of the competition, newcomer Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) earned his first collegiate win with a swim of 1:42.22 in the 200 Free.
Benton was next on the list to earn solo honors, doing so with a speed of 49.98 seconds in the 100 Fly. Making his mark early, Green was right on the Baltimore native's heels, coming in at a time of 50.09 for a runner-up finish.
Stevens earned his second first-place finish of the afternoon when he won the 100 Back with a time of 51.45.
The Bison would go on to close out this year's Battle at the Burr with a victory as they won the 200 Free Relay, swimming a time of 1:23.66.
Before Saturday's meet, Howard Director of Swimming & Diving Nicholas Askew and the men's program were recognized for last year's first Northeast Conference title with a special ring ceremony, held on the campus Friday evening.
Howard is back in action Saturday, October 14, at 1 p.m., when they take on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
