Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Howard University men's cross country team with record-setting performance in their season opener at the Mount 5K Duals, hosted by Mount St. Mary's University.
Adebiyi finished fifth overall in the event with a new school benchmark (15:56.40), shattering his own record by 17 seconds.
"It was a great race today," said Adebiyi, who looks to earn All-MEAC honors for the second straight season. "I was happy to set the tone for the rest of our team."
Overall, HU placed third overall with
Julian Lawson (Sewell, N.J.),
Tafari Stephenson (Bowie, Md.),
Lamar Wilson (Silver Spring, Md.) and
Marsellis Davis (Columbus, Ohio) rounding out the top 5 for Howard, respectively.
"It's a great start to the season, especially setting a new school record," said Howard Cross Country head coach
Wesley Stephens. "I was very pleased with the effort we gave today."
Howard returns to action Friday (Sept. 16) to compete in a loaded field at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Meet is set to start at 6:30 p.m., immediately after the women's 5K race at 5:15 p.m.
