NORFOLK, Va. (July 29, 2022) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its 2022 Football Preseason Team where Howard University saw eight Bison make the cut. The announcement came during the league's annual media day, live on ESPN+.
Skill players
Kenny Gallop, Jr. (Portsmouth, Va.) and
Antoine Murray (Miramar, Fla.), along with linemen
Darrian Brokenburr (Manassas, Va.),
Anim Dankwah (Toronto, Canada) and
Darius Fox (Washington) earned first team honors while running backs
Jarett Hunter (Mineral, Va.) and
Ian Wheeler (Houston) and offensive lineman
DeShawn Ingram (Detroit) claimed spots on the league's second team.
Gallop, 2021 All-MEAC Second Team, finished second in the league with 75 total tackles (45 solos) a year ago, including a pair of double-digit tackle performances. On Oct. 23, 2021, the Virginia native recorded 14 total tackles (eight solos) versus Norfolk State.
Murray, All-MEAC Second Team, produced 629 receiving yards on 33 catches with seven TDs during the 2021 season. In the home win over Morgan State (Oct. 8, 2021), he registered a career-high 171 receiving yards, including a school record 97-yard touchdown catch.
Last season, Brokenburr finished tied for fifth in the conference with 3.5 sacks while racking up 24 total tackles (19 solos). In the home win over FCS powerhouse Sacred Heart (Oct. 2, 2021), the Virginia native produced seven total tackles (six solos) with 2.5 sacks.
A year ago, Dankwah, Fox and Ingram helped HU lead the league's top passing attack (232.1/game) while finishing second in total offense (362.4/game). On Oct. 8, 2021, the Bison had a season-high 474 total offense in the win over rival Morgan State.
Hunter placed fourth in the league with 643 rushing yards during the 2021 campaign while finishing ninth overall in total receptions (29). On Sept. 4, 2021, versus No. 22 Richmond, the all-around tailback had 128 all-purpose yards (93 rushing & 35 receiving).
Wheeler made the preseason squad as a running back and kick returner. Last season, the Houston product had 211 all-purpose yards (119 KR, 89 rushing & three receiving) with two total TDs, including a 96-yard KO return versus Norfolk State (Oct. 23, 2021).
Additionally, the conference unveiled its Predicted Order of Finish where the Bison were projected to finish fifth overall, tallying 52 points and one first-place vote.
Norfolk State's J.J. Davis was named MEAC Preseason Player of the Year while South Carolina State's (SCSU) Jeblonski Green took home the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. SCSU was projected to win the league for the second straight season after recording 124 points (eight first-place votes).
On Aug. 27, HU will make its debut in the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge, facing Alabama State at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., live on ESPN.
