VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 24, 2022) – No. 8 Howard University women's bowling team opened its title run with a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Norfolk State (NSU) in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship, held at Pinboy's at the Beach in Virginia Beach, Va.

With the victory, Howard squares off against top-seeded North Carolina A&T State (NCAT) Friday (March 25) at 9 a.m.

HU took the early match lead, winning the traditional round, 826-738.

Sophomore Aleyana DeBrest (Philadelphia) led the way, scoring 188, followed by Janae Bradford (Chicago) with 175.

NSU rebounded and tied the match after winning the Baker total pinfall portion (850-725); thus, forcing the Baker best-of-seven round.

In the deciding round, Howard rallied to comeback to win, 4-2, thanks to senior Jahnia Phillips (Elmont, N.Y.) delivering three strikes in the final frame and propelling the Bison into the next round.

Friday's action begins with four matchups, including the first elimination match between No. 8 Norfolk State and No. 7 Coppin State.
