17 Bison Receive MEAC Postseason Honors

Football acknowledged for championship season

NORFOLK, Va. (November 22, 2022) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its 2022 football postseason accolades where Howard University saw 17 Bison receive recognition for their championship season. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon.

All awards and honors were voted on by the league's head football coaches and sports information directors.

Six Bison were named to the All-MEAC First Team, led by graduate wideout Antoine Murray (Miramar, Fla.) and junior safety Kenny Gallop, Jr. (Portsmouth, Va.). Murray finished his collegiate career leading the league with 40 receptions while Gallop topped the conference with 58 solo tackles (89 total).

Other notable Bison on the All-MEAC First Team included senior tight end Brennan Brown (Dallas), senior offensive lineman Anim Dankwah (Accra, Ghana) and defensive lineman graduate Jevin Jackson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and junior Marcus Brown (Houston).

Senior captains defensive lineman Darrian Brokenburr (Manassas, Va.) and quarterback Quinton Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) headlined the All-MEAC Second Team. Williams accounted for 21 total TDs (16 passing, four rushing & one receiving) while the Virginia native had 21 total tackles (10 solos) in six games.

Five other Bison joined Brokenburr and Williams on the All-MEAC Second Team: offensive linemen senior DeShawn Ingram (Detroit) and sophomore Darius Fox (Washington); junior running back Jarett Hunter (Mineral, Va.); sophomore defensive back Robert Jones III (Fairwood, Md.) and senior return specialist Ian Wheeler (Houston).

Graduate punter Phillip Richards (Melbourne, Australia), senior linebacker Christian White (Highland Springs, Va.), junior wideout Kasey Hawthorne (Sebring, Fla.) and freshman running back Eden James (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) round out the honors, earning spots on the All-MEAC Third Team.

North Carolina Central redshirt senior Robert Mitchell was named MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year while Eagles head coach Trei Oliver took home the league's Coach of the Year. Delaware State freshman tailback Marquis Gillis claimed the conference's Rookie of the Year award.

In partnership with the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame, the MEAC will announce its Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year as part of the festivities surrounding the 64th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Tuesday (Dec. 6) at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

Despite not making the Celebration Bowl, third-year head coach Larry Scott and the Bison won five games in a season for the first time since 2017 (7-4) and a MEAC title since 1993.
