ANNAPOLIS, Md. (January 22, 2022) – Howard University women's track & field squad put on a dominant performance at the Wesley Brown Invitational, hosted by the Navy Midshipmen.
Overall, the Bison had six first-place finishes in Annapolis.
Senior
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) headlined the weekend, winning the 400-meter race with a new facility record (54.45). The previous mark was set in 2018 (54.58).
Fellow classmate
Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) also competed in the 400-meter dash, claiming third overall with a 58.48 time.
Wright, seniors
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) and
Ameenah Saalih (Willingboro, N.J.) and rookie
Sherri-Anne Norton (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 4x400 relay, clocking in at 3:52.13.
In the 60-meter dash, six Bison reached the finals where they took the first five slots. Saalih grabbed the top spot (7.66), followed by Gbai (7.72) and newcomer
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md./7.73).
Gbai earned first place in the 200-meter dash (24.18) with Pittman (24.53) and Saalih (24.69) claiming second and third, respectively.
In the short hurdles final, sophomore
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) secured the top time (8.61), followed by Wright (8.77).
In the field, freshman
Nikayla Fitzgerald (Kyle, Texas) took home gold in the long jump, leaping nearly 20 feet (6.05 meters).
On Jan. 28-29, the Bison travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Rob McCravy Invitational, hosted by the Kentucky Wildcats.
