ANNAPOLIS, Md. & CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (December 4, 2021) – Howard University senior thrower
Diana Effiom (Dallas) opened the new indoor season with a statement, setting a new school benchmark at the Navy Invitational, hosted by Navy.
The Dallas native shattered her own record in the weight throw, tossing over 56 feet (17.11 meters). The previous mark was 16.32 meters (53'3"), set in January 2020.
Although Effiom had huge success in Maryland, the Bison found most of its success at the Ivy & HBCU Challenge, hosted by Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
HU dominated in the 300-meter dash, led by seniors
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia),
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) and
Ozioma Scott (Guyana, Georgetown). The Bison trio went first (38.90), second (38.90) and third (38.91), respectively, in the event.
Second-year Bison
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) claimed first-place in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.45.
Other notable runner included rookie
Lamaria Washington (Miami) taking third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.61.
In the field, DMV native senior
Ja'Tae Joyner (Bowie, Md.) finished runner-up in the triple jump, leaping 40 feet (12.13 meters).
Howard returns after the New Year for the Wagner Invitational (Jan. 7), hosted by Wagner College.
