FREDERICK, Md. (October 17, 2021) – Howard University women's bowling team opened the new season with four victories at the Mount Shootout, hosted by Mount St. Mary's (MSM). The two-day event (Oct. 16-17) was HU's first time back on the lanes since February 2020.
Howard placed fifth overall after going 4-6 in the two-day span.
Saturday (Oct. 16), Howard began the tourney with a pair of victories in Baker play. HU knocked off Pittsburgh-Greensburg, 786-630, followed by a close win over Chestnut Hill College, 773-767.
HU finished Saturday with losses against No. 13 MSM (748-1,117), Kutztown (844-937) and Chestnut Hill College (800-814).
The next day (Oct. 17), senior
Janae Bradford (Chicago) led the Bison in five traditional matches. The Chicago native knocked down 802 pins in five contests with a match-high 176 against conference rival Coppin State (CSU).
After dropping the first traditional match to The Mount, 793-918, HU rebounded with back-to-back victories over Kutztown, 795-758, and La Roche, 735-711.
Howard ended the weekend with setbacks against CSU, 773-791, and Felician, 726-853.
Seniors
Jahnia Phillips (Elmont, N.Y.) and
Jayla Webster (Woodbridge, Va.) each rolled five games Sunday, finishing with 782 and 758 pinfalls, respectively.
Mount St. Mary's won the tournament after dropping only one contest all weekend (9-1).
On Oct. 29-31, the Bison travel to Glen Allen, Va., for the Virginia Union Invitational.
