GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 13, 2019) – Despite the tough conditions, the Howard University Women's Track & Field squad had a solid outing at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by North Carolina A&T State.
The day was highlighted by a pair of first-place finishes.
The 4x400 relay squad of juniors
Sydney Benson (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and
Oluchi Ike (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and sophomores
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) and
Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) won the event, clocking in at 3:46.16.
The other 4x400 relay team of senior
Aliyah Hale (Los Angeles), junior
Uchechi Onuoha (Yardly, Pa.) and newcomers
Makenli Raspberry (Houston) and
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) claimed third overall with a 3:54.08 time.
Individually, Ike, Onouha and Wright each competed in the 400-meter hurdles where they had top 10 finishes.
Ike continued her dominance in the 400-meter hurdles by winning the event (1:00.32) while Onouha took third (1:01.99). Wright earned a seventh-place finish after becoming the 17
th Bison to qualify for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, recording a new personal best (1:02.96).
Second-year runner
Destiny Stanford (Woolwhich Township, N.J.) finished runner-up in the 1500-meter (4:41.92) while Gbai grabbed fourth in the 200-meter dash (24.28).
Benson and freshman
Melanie White (Orlando, Fla.) represented HU in the 800-meter run where the Michigan native registered an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Qualifier time of 2:10.70 (season best). White took 13
th in the race but earned a spot in the MEAC Outdoor Championships after running a 2:13.73 mark.
Other notable track performances include Scott placing sixth in the 400-meter dash (55.81) and the 4x100 relay squad of Gbai, Hale, Onouha and sophomore
Ameenah Saalih (Willingboro, N.J.) taking fourth overall (47.50).
In the field, sophomore
Kaylah Clark (Miami) and senior
Mi-ah Watkins (Bronx, N.Y.) participated in the hammer throw where they finished fourth (47.50m; 155'10") and seventh (42.70m; 140'1"), respectively.
