WILMINGTON, N.C. (March 8, 2019) – Howard University women's track & field team came out the gate strong in their outdoor debut at the Wendy's Seahawk Invitational, hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
After day one, three Bison qualified for the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
In the field, sophomore
Kaylah Clark (Miami) and newcomer
Diana Effiom each punch their tickets in the women's hammer throw. Clark finished runner-up after throwing 42.68m (140') while Effiom earned fifth place (38.83m; 127'40").
Junior
Uchechi Onuoha (Yardly, Pa.) reached the conference championships for the third consecutive year after posting the best time in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.09).
Freshmen
Nia Guine-Herndon (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
Lauren Lowe (Houston) joined Onuoha in Saturday's finals, clocking in at 15.50 and 15.14, respectively.
In the women's 100-meter dash, a trio of Bison made the finals.
Sophomore
Ameenah Saalih (Willingboro, N.J.; 12.16), newcomer
Kennedy Lewis (Atlanta; 12.21) and second-year sprinter
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia; 12.22) finished first, second and third, respectively.
Other noteworthy Bison included freshman
Kylan Rice (Smyrna, Ga.) taking second in the women's long jump (5.49m; 18').

Howard concludes the weekend in Wilmington, N.C. with day two, starting at 10 a.m. with field events. At noon, the running events begin with relays.
