@HUTrackandField Women Momentum Continues in New York

Several Bison put on a show in the Big Apple

NEW YORK & STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (January 12, 2019) – Howard University Women's Track & Field team rode its momentum into the weekend with a pair of meets at the HBCU Battle and Great Dane Classic, hosted by Albany.

Several Bison put on a show in the Big Apple, led by sophomore Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) and newcomer Kennedy Lewis (Atlanta).

At the HBCU Battle, Gbai and Lewis placed first and second, respectively, in the women's 200-meter dash. Gbai won the race with a 24.76 mark while Lewis finished with a 25.14 time. With Lewis' efforts, she joined Gbai and qualified for the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in Landover, Md.

Both Bison also completed in the 60-meter dash where Gbai took second overall (7.68) and Lewis clocked in at 7.72. Both were personal bests and good enough for the 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships in Boston.

Friday also saw sophomore Destiny Stanford (Woolwhich Township, N.J.) win the mile run, recording a 5:20.47 mark.

Freshman Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) placed second in the women's 400-meter dash with a new personal best (58.45). Currently, Wright has the fastest time of any Bison this season in that event.

Third-year runner Uchechi Onuoha (Yardly, Pa.) claimed third in the 60-meter hurdles after an 8.80 time.

In the women's 4x400 relay, Wright, senior Aliyah Hale (Los Angeles), Oluchi Ike (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and newcomer Makenli Raspberry (Houston) finished second overall after producing the fastest time of any team this season (3:54.41).

In the field, sophomore jumper Rachel Edler (Stone Mountain, Ga.) won the women's triple jump with a 11.87m (38'9") mark.

Saturday, Gbai earned third in the 200-meter dash after running a season-best (24.59).
