GREENSBORO, N.C. (February 17, 2018) – After two tough losses Friday, Coach
Lauren McCoy and the Howard University Softball team erupted for 17 runs and blasted Maryland Eastern Shore, 17-4, for their first victory of the season. The contest took place in Greensboro, N.C. as part of the Aggie Invitational, hosted by North Carolina A&T State.
Overall, 10 Bison recorded a hit. Junior
Jasmine Gibson led the way, going 3-of-4 with three runs scored and a double. Freshman
Alyssa Lavine went 2-of-4 with five RBIs, two runs scored, and a three-run blast in the first.
Howard capitalized on the Hawks' miscue in the opening inning where they tallied eight runs. Senior
Brooklyn Emory reached on an error by the second baseman, which kept the frame going.
HU drove in five more runs after the error, capped off by a three-run double from sophomore
Kamryn Tillman.
Coach McCoy's squad kept the pressure on, scoring three times in the second and third, 14-0. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back with a pair of runs in the third, 14-2, but the Bison ensured this contest would end early with three more runs in the fifth, 17-2.
Eastern Shore produced two runs in the fifth, but this would not prevent the eight-run mercy rule.
Howard concludes the weekend with another contest against North Carolina A&T State. First-pitch is set for noon.
