GLEN ALLEN, Va. (November 3, 2018) – After fighting their way into the top 10, the Howard University Women's Bowling team continued the good fight and jumped to seven place at the Virginia Union (VUU) Invitational. The team competed in five traditional style matches and went 4-1 on the day.
"The team communicated well together and never gave up," said sophomore
Carolyn Williams (Glen Burnie, Md.). "We fought back, and this is the Bison bowling I knew we would grow and become. Tomorrow is another climb and we are ready for it!"
HU opened the day defeating No. 15 Sacred Heart, 909-904, where the match came down to the final frame. Williams threw a double in the tenth to put Howard over the top.
Howard edged out Duquesne, 868-848, in another contest that was decided in the tenth and final frame.
After the loss to Mount St. Mary's, 813-853, the Bison bounced back and closed out the day with victories over Mount Aloysius, 838-812, and Chestnut Hill, 927-869.
Individually, the four and five spots meshed well together all day and were able to deliver in clutch moments.
Freshman
Janae Bradford (Chicago) had a standout performance on the lanes, averaging 188.4 while shooting her first 200-game on her collegiate career versus Chestnut Hill (216).
"Janae [Bradford] really out did herself today," said senior captain
Shykeia Spinks (Hyattsville, Md.) on her teammate. "Not only did she post a high team average, but she was in the pocket all day. Her consistency and execution were an integral part of today's success, proving that the team can really depend on her."
Bradford was able to climb the ladder and finish with a 944 series in five games.
Williams finished closely behind Bradford, ending with 942 total pinfalls while averaging 188.2 pins per match.
"I am beyond proud of Janae," Williams stated regarding her teammate. "We were able to feed off each other's energy and put quality shots together. I am honored to be her teammate and can't wait to see how we grow together as the season continues."
Howard concludes the weekend with three best-of-seven matches Sunday (Nov. 4). The action starts 9 a.m. at Bowl America Short Pump.
