NORFOLK, Va. (November 26, 2018) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its 2018 football postseason accolades where Howard University witnessed eight Bison honored. The announcement came Monday.
The teams were voted on by the MEAC's head football coaches and sports information directors.
Among the honorees included graduate students
James Holmon (All-MEAC First Team) and
Tyler Shadrach (All-MEAC First Team), senior
Justin Chaney (All-MEAC First Team), juniors
Marcellos Allison (All-MEAC Third Team),
Kyle Anthony (All-MEAC First Team), and
Jequez Ezzard (All-MEAC First Team), sophomore
Caylin Newton (All-MEAC First Team), and redshirt freshman
Dedrick Parson (MEAC Rookie of the Year; All-MEAC Second Team).
Parson (Philadelphia) headlines HU after becoming the second straight Bison to win the league's rookie of the year award behind Newton. He ranked among the league leaders in several categories, including rushing yards (3
rd), scoring (3
rd) and all-purpose yards (6
th). The Philadelphia native had two 100-yard games, including a season-best 149 in the home victory over Florida A&M (Nov. 3).
After winning the 2017 MEAC Rookie of the Year award, Newton (Atlanta) ended his sophomore campaign ranking among the nation's leaders in several categories, including passing yards per completion (1
st) and total offense (7
th). The Atlanta product was named to the 2018 Walter Payton Award Watch List after winning MEAC Offensive Player of the Week twice. In the season opener against Ohio (Sept. 1), he posted 532 total yards, which was the third highest output in program history.
Third-year wideouts Anthony (Miramar, Fla.) and Ezzard (College Park, Ga.) gave defensive coordinator's nightmares as they torched several secondaries throughout the year. Anthony led the conference in receptions per game (5.3) and finished third in receiving yards per game (65.9). Ezzard led the country in yards per reception (26.6) while setting a new school record for receiving yards in a game (223) at Ohio (Sept. 1).
Holmon (Augusta, Ga.) and Shadrach (Teaneck, N.J.) anchored one the nation's best offenses. The duo protected Newton and helped HU rank fourth in the country in passing yards per completion (17.27) while leading the MEAC in scoring offense (33.6), total offense (470.8) and rushing yards per game (192.8). Howard rushed over 100 yards in nine games, including six 200-yard games, and threw over 300 yards in five games, including a pair of 400-yard performances.
After missing last season, Chaney (Hammond, La.) returned in a big way by being named to the All-MEAC First Team. The Louisiana native ended his Bison career finishing fifth on the squad in receptions (10) and receiving yards (166). On Sept. 22, he had a season-high 61 receiving yards on four catches in the victory over Bethune-Cookman at the 35
th annual Circle City Classic in Indianapolis.
Allison (Durham, N.C.) ended his junior campaign earning a spot on the All-MEAC Third Team. The North Carolina product ranked tied for seventh in tackles per game (7.0). On Oct. 20, he had a season-high 11 tackles in the road win at Morgan State. Two weeks later, the tackling machine recorded nine in the home victory against Florida A&M (Nov. 3).
North Carolina A&T State's Sam Washington won 2018 MEAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Aggies to another league title. Micah Shaw (North Carolina A&T State) claimed 2018 MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year.
In a partnership with the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame, the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year will be announced as part of the festivities surrounding the 60
th NFF Annual Awards Dinner, Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Hilton Midtown in New York City. The event will be streamed live at 9:30 a.m. via the NFF website.
