ARLINGTON, Va. – The Howard University men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up a dual meet against Marymount on Friday afternoon in the Rose Bente Lee Center. The men's team bested the Saints, 116-88, but the women's team dropped a close decision, 105-100.
The men's squad (4-6) started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay when Don Brazelton, Xavier Philips, Alexander Barnes and TJ Miller touched the wall in 1:38.73. Nicholas Haughton swam to first in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:21.41, followed by Noah Nicholas in second (10:38.01).
In the 200 freestyle, Mark McCluskey was second (1:49.66) and Philips picked up third in 1:50.84. Miller earned second in the 50 freestyle (21.99) before Farion Cooper placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.59 with Jonathan Hill in second (2:05.76).
Barnes claimed first in 100 butterfly in 53.26 and Miller clinched the victory in the 100 freestyle (47.75). Howard swept the 100 backstroke, starting with Brazelton in first in 54.72. Devin Guardino (55.67) and Cooper (57.45) were second and third, respectively. In the 500 freestyle, Haughton touched the wall in 4:58.59 to win and Philips placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.40.
The women (3-7) opened the day with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay after KaSandra Kaplan, Latroya Pina, Danielle Brown and Susanna Reese combined to complete the race in 1:54.83. Kayla Walker finished second in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 11:55.92.
Brown checked in second in the 200 freestyle (2:02.44) with Leanne McMaster in third (2:02.86). Brown also took home first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.09). Reese won the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.57 and Andreas Weech was closed behind in 25.80. Pina swam to second in the 200 IM (2:18.22) and McMaster notched a top-place finish in the 100 freestyle (55.38).
In the 100 backstroke, Kaplan swam the race in 1:01.17 for the triumph before Pina (1:09.64) and Akesha Minnifee-Cox (1:11.66) were second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Reese, Kaplan, Weech and McMaster finished the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.90 to claim first place and close the meet.
Howard will get back in Burr Gym Pool for its regular season finale on Saturday, Jan. 28 when it hosts Catholic. The action is set to begin at 10 a.m.
