WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept its home opener against Barton College in the Burr Gym Pool on Saturday afternoon.
The women's team picked up its first win of the 2016-17 season with a commanding 140-29 victory over the Bulldogs.
The Bison swept the 50 freestyle as Paris Phillips swam to first in 24.76, followed by Susanna Reese (24.50), Andreas Weach (26.26) and Skylar Smith (26.59). Howard also claimed the top three spots in the 100 butterfly behind Danielle Brown (1:02.1), Akesha Minnifee-Cox (1:09.42) and Summer Lewis (1:13.62).
Brown also won the 500 freestyle in 5:33.44 and Walker touched the wall third in 5:50.88. KaSandra Kaplan took first in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:02.20. Weach (1:09.93), Michaella Johnson (1:10.65) and Walker (1:13.86) grabbed the next three spots. Latroya Pina swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.82 to win it.
The men's team earned its second straight dual meet win with a 118.50-67.50 decision.
Mark McCluskey finished first in the 50 freestyle in 22.27, before Farion Cooper took the top spot in the 200 IM (2:05.35). JT Miller touched the wall in 51.53 to win the 100 butterfly, followed by Alexander Barnes in second in 54.12.
Nicholas Haughton claimed the 100 freestyle (49.94) and Devin Guardino took the 100 backstroke (57.11). Xavier Philips also had a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.68.
Barnes, Cooper, Haughton and McCluskey swam to victory in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:29.77.
The Bison will host its Alumni Meet on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
