NORFOLK, VA---Howard University's Anthony Philyaw has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week as announced today.
A 6-1, 205-pound junior from Redondo Beach, CA, Philyaw rushed for a school-record 281 yards on 36 carries and two TDs in Howard's 26-21 win over Delaware State in the regular season finale this past Saturday.
The 281 yards eclipses the old mark of 260 yards set by former Howard All American Harvey Reed in 1987. That mark stood almost 30 years before Philyaw's accomplishment.
Philyaw finishes the season with 1,240 yards and 9 touchdowns, good for second in the MEAC. It was the first 1,000-yard rushing effort since Jay Colbert in 2002 (1,001 yards). Philyaw, who had 200-yard rushing efforts this season, now has close to 2,000 yards and 24 TDs in his two-year career.
Other receiving notable mention, include senior defensive tackle Ghafona Iduwe (10 solo tackles), freshman punter Damon Gillespie (career-high 40 yards per punt including a 72 yarder) and senior offensive tackle Torre Boyd (94 percent on all blocking assignments).
