Box Score 4 This past weekend was a busy one for Howard University's fall sports teams, as all five in-season sports - Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Soccer, and Men's & Women's Cross Country - took to the road for competition. Here is a recap of all the weekend's action:
VOLLEYBALL CLAIMS PROVIDENCE FRIARS CLASSIC TITLE, IMPROVE TO 10-5
PROVIDENCE, RI --- Howard Women's Volleyball took the Ninth Annual Friars Classic title after winning two-of-three games during the two-day event on the campus of Providence College.
In Howard's first match against fellow MEAC member on Friday, HU rallied from a two-set deficit to tame the Bears in 5 sets, 23-25; 28-30;
25-16;
25-23;
15-10. Four Lady Bison logged double-digit kills, led by junior
Assata Conway's 20 successful attacks. Junior
Destinee Harrison had 15 kills, freshman
Katherine Broussard added 13, and junior
Stephanie Shultis put away 10 while dishing out a season-high and school-record 58 assists. Junior
Allyson Lods notched a game-high 28 digs.
HU's first game on Saturday pitted them against St. Francis Brooklyn, whom the Lady Bison defeated in a 5-set thriller two weeks prior in New York. The Terriers would take the first set but Howard would regain composure and easily take the next three sets and the match, 3-1 (21-25,
25-15,
25-14,
25-12). Broussard and junior
Meagan Lagerlef each had 12 kills, with Broussard adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Conway put away 10 attacks and posted the best attack percentage of the three players with 10+ kills (.600; 10-1-15). Shultis had another 37 assists and Lods tied Broussard's team lead with 12 digs.
The Lady Bison's lone setback came in the Classic's final matchup against the host Friars, falling to Providence, 3-1. The trio of Broussard (12 kills), Conway (11) and Harrison (10) accounted for 33 of Howard's 46 kills. Lods finished with another 10 digs and Shultis had 35 assists.
Shultis earned Friars Classic Tournament MVP honors and Broussard joined her on the All-Tournament team.
Burr Gymnasium will be the next site for a Howard Volleyball match, as the Lady Bison welcome East Carolina to Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 PM.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PLACE THIRD AT CAPPY ANDERSON INVITATIONAL
PRINCESS ANNE, MD --- The Howard University men and women's cross country teams captured third place in the Cappy Anderson Cross Country Invitational at the UMES Cross Country Complex.
The Bison men tallied 54 points to finish behind only Norfolk State (38 points) and Seton Hall (47). Leading the way for Howard was
Elisha Metto, who finished second behind NSU's Damtew Adnew. A junior from Kenya, Metto clocked in at 26:36.14 in the 8K course.
Giovani Mowatt, a junior from Jamaica, finished seventh with a time of 27:40.72, while
James Carey (junior, Bahamas) placed 12th with a time of 28:09.54.
Aaron Harrison (senior, Chesapeake, VA) finished 14
th at 28:27.35 and
Elly Rono (Kenya) rounded out Howard's top-20 runners with a 19th place, 28:51.74 run.
The Lady Bison have shown improvement with each passing week, which showed in their performance this week. They totaled 73 points, behind only behind Norfolk State and Seton Hall with 35 and 47 points, respectively in the 5K course. For the second straight week,
Rori Ann Nalls put on a noteworthy performance. The sophomore from Chicago, IL finished sixth with a time of 20:04.90 while sophomore
Mariza Diaz (San Diego, CA) had another solid showing as well (11th; 20:42.40), finishing just ahead of another sophomore,
Cynthia Ruffin (Chula Vista, CA) with a 21:02.0 time and senior
Candice German (Philadelphia, PA) at 21:04.80.
The teams will continue their road to the MEAC Championships when they travel to Towson, MD for the Towson Invitational on Saturday, September 28.
WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS MATCH TO FUTURE SWAC RIVAL PRAIRIE VIEW
HOUSTON, TX --- Howard Women's Soccer traveled to Texas over the weekend to face a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) schools in a preview of the competition the Lady Bison will face as a member of the conference beginning in 2014.
Friday's match against TSU was cancelled due to inclement weather, but Sunday's tilt versus Prairie View A&M went on as scheduled. Playing on a pitch at Prairie View that was also affected by the weather conditions, Howard was shut out by the Lady Panthers 2-0 to fall to 2-4-1 on the season.
Angie Guillory of PVAMU (1-7) beat Howard for a pair of goals in each period to help Prairie View claim its first win of the year. Despite recording 11 shots (with eight on goal), Howard was unable to capitalize on their chances. Junior goalkeeper
Kyra Dickinson saved eight of PVAMU's 10 shots on goal.
TWO BISON SOCCER PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM; TEAM DROPS PAIR IN ASHEVILLE INVITATIONAL
ASHEVILLE, NC --- Juniors Frederick Todd II and
Rahman Alarape were named to the UNC Asheville Soccer Invitational All-Tournament team after Howard's pair of games in the four-team competition over the weekend. Unfortunately, the Bison were unable to earn their first win of the season, dropping a pair of games to host UNC Asheville (2-1) and Radford (2-0) on Friday and Sunday.
The third-year duo connected on a second half, game-tying goal in Friday's game against Asheville, before UNCA took the lead for good minutes later.
Junior goalkeeper
Eric Hamilton tallied 15 total saves over the weekend's two games.
Howard will look to enter the win column when St. Francis (PA) visits Greene Stadium on Friday, September 27 at 3:00 PM.
