Norfolk, VA---July 26--Joshua Matthews, Damon Gresham Chisholm and Julien David have been selected to the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pre-season All-Conference team. The team is based on votes by the conference coaches and sports information directors.
Matthews, a 6-4, 330-pound senior guard was an all-conference selection in 2012 after helping the Bison finish as one of the top rushing teams in the MEAC. The Bowman, SC native has been named to several pre-season teams.
Chisholm was also an All-MEAC selection in 2012 after having a phenomenal season. The 6-2, 250-pound defensive end wreaked havoc on defenses last year, recording 18 tackles for losses, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles to rank among the nation's best in those statistical categories. Chisholm was named the Rookie of the Year and thus became the first player in school history to be named both first team and Rookie of the Year. He has also been cited on several preseason All American lists.
David had an outstanding season in 2012, leading the team in tackles while also making big plays en route to being named first team all conference. The 5-11, 195-pound safety from Coral Springs, FL finished among the conference leaders in tackles last season. David has been named to numerous preseason lists.
Named to the second team were Aquanius Freeman, David Wilson and John Smith. Freeman is a 5-10, 195-pound junior running back from New Orleans, La, who finished second on the team in rushing with 441 yards and 5 TDs.
Wilson became a viable option in the Howard passing attack. The 6-4, 240-pound senior from Sacramento, CA caught 16 passes for 220 yards and 3 TDs and was named to the second team.
Smith is a 6-7, 275-pound red-shirt sophomore offensive tackle, who showed much promise last season and figures to be a mainstay on a young Howard offensive line.
The Bison were picked sixth in the preseason poll with 227 points. Bethune Cookman was picked to win the league. Howard was picked eighth in the pre-season poll last season, but went on to finish second.
The Howard players report for camp on Friday, August 2. Media and photo day is scheduled for Wednesday, August 7 at 2 pm in Greene Stadium.
