Howard v. Maryland Eastern Shore
WASHINGTON, D.C. (howard-bison.com) – February 9 – It was a season-breaking scoring outing for the Howard University women's basketball team, as 83 percent (10-of-12) of the Lady Bison roster contributed to the team's total offensive in HU's 59-30 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Washington, D.C., on the Burr Gymnasium hardwood.
Blue and white senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne topped the squad with 17 points and seven assists, while Saadia Doyle led the rebounding campaign with 11 boards and two steals. Kara Smith was one-point shy of scoring on double-figures with nine points, while Julee O'Neal came off the bench as the third leading scorer with seven points.
In the seventh conference win of the season, Howard shot 30 percent from the field (20-of-66), 36 percent from the long range (10-of-28), and 69 from the charity stripe (9-of-13).
Howard grasped the contest in the first half with ease, holding UMES to single figures until the 5:25 mark and taking a half-high 13-point margin lead at the 4:07 mark. HU concluded the first 20 minutes action with a 10-point 26-16 lead.
The Lady Bison continued to maintain a strong defense and offensive presence, gradually progressing to a 21-point lead by the 12:23 mark off of five consecutive points by freshman Imani Bailey.
UMES snapped the 20-point plus margin lead with a three-point basket by Shawnee Sweeney.
Senior Adelle Walton, who returns to the court after a year, scored a three-pointer at the 6:44 mark to pace Howard on a 13-6 lead and grasp win no. 13 of the season.
Comparatively, Howard outscored UMES off of turnovers, second chances, fast breaks and from the bench.
The Lady Bison will conclude the four-game homestand on Monday, Feb. 11 with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Morgan State University in Burr Gymnasium.
