HOWARD TALLIES 20 TOP TEN FINISHES DURING CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

LANDOVER, MD. (www.howard-bison.com) – February 16 – The Howard University men's and women's track and field program concluded the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship with 20 top ten finishes, including a first place finish by Robert Mercer of the men's squad.

Mercer topped the Bison with a height of 4.72 meters during the men's pole vault, while Giovani Mowatt clinched the next best finish during the 1-mile run with a second place finish in 4:20.55.  Mowatt also took fourth place during the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.60.

Going down the list, Wallace Spencer attained a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.94.  Wesley Stephens, who represented HU in heptathlon events, earned his best finish in the men's 1000-meter run with a six place in 3:03.23.  During the men's pole valut, Stephens reached an eighth place tie at a height of 2.85 meters.

In ninth place, Aaron finished the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:18.40 and the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:41.85. 

Wallace Spencer, Mowatt, Oluwaseyi Dursogoa and James Carey joined forces to take ninth place in 4x400 meter relay in 3:23.04, while Carey, Dominique Mathis, Durosoga and Mowatt took ninth place in men's distance medley in 10:56.32.

Stephens finished out the top ten finishes for the men in 10th place during the Men's Shot Put Heptathlon with a throw of 9.84 meters.

Joy Gilmer took the top finish for the Lady Bison, placing fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.17.

Kayla Sawtell represented Howard in the indoor pentathlon, taking eighth in the women's 60-meter hurdles in 9.32 and eighth place during the women' shot put with a throw of 8.80 meters.

For a collective eighth place finish, Symone Glover, Jasmine Shelby, Monica Todd and Gilmer finished the 4x400 meter relay in 3:51.98, as RoriAnn Nalls, Shelby, Gilmer and Mariza Diaz notched eighth during the distance medley with a time of 12:51.93.

Diaz also earned a top ten finish in the 3000-meter run with 10th place in 11:03.48 and Briana Jones rounded out the HU finishes with 10th place in the long jump with a leap of 5.09 meters.

Howard will lace up their spikes during outdoor competition which begins on Sunday, Feb. 24 at George Mason.
