Greg McGhee has been named the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year as as voted by the head football coaches and the sports information directors of the conference.
McGhee, a 6-3, 208-pound junior from Pittsburgh, PA, had his best season as a Bison, rushing for a career-high 896 yards, good enough for third in the conference while passing for 2,379 and 16 TDs. Â He was second in passing and led the conference in total offense with over 272 yards per game.
McGhee led Howard to five wins in its last six games as the Bison averaged over 40 points and more than 400 yards per game in the last three contests.
McGhee led the MEAC in total offense and ranked nationally. Â He was the MEAC Rookie of the Year in 2011.
Also named to the first team was senior cornerback Adeomola Olatunji. Â The 6-4, 195-pound senior from Riverdale, MD, started for the first time in his career and made the best of it, picking off three passes while leading the conference in passes broken up with 16. Â Olatunji also recorded 41 solos, 9 assists and a tackle for a loss.
Named to the second team was running
Anthony Philyaw. The 6-1, 210-pound freshman from Los Angeles, CA, rushed for 722 yards and a conference-high 15 TDs. Â He also displayed his versatility by catching 15 passes for 188 yards and a TD.
Philyaw was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week three times during the season and the Sports Network FCS National Co-Rookie of the Week twice.
On the third team,
Toree Boyd, Deonta Allen Wright,
Joshua Matthews and Damon Gresham Chisholm were all selected. Â Boyd, a 6-4, 290-pound freshman offensive tackle from Miami, FL, started all 12 games and was one of the keys to the Bison's rushing attack, which finished second in the MEAC with an average of 200 yards per game.
Allen Wright, a 6-5, 305-pound red-shirt sophomore from Midlothain, VA, started for the first time in his career and had an outstanding season. He was one of the key components to Howard's leading the MEAC in fewest sacks allowed and third in passing offense. Â He was named the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week once during the season.
Matthews, a 6-4, 313-pound senior center from Bowman, SC, had an outstanding season as well anchoring the line that featured four first year starters. Â Matthews' leadership proved to be pivotal as the Bison led the conference in total offense with over 400 yards per game and in both third down (48 percent) and fourth down conversion (68 percent). Matthews was a first team selection last season and a 2013 preseason first team pick.
Greshman Chisholm, last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year and first team all-conference selection, had another outstanding season, despite seeing a lot of double teams. Â The sophomore defensive end from Douglasville, GA, finished with 21 solos, 17 assists, 10.0 tackles for losses and 3.5 sacks.
There were additional honors for the Bison. Â McGhee was also named the College Sports Madness MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. Â Teammates
