HOWARD FALLS TO HAMPTON 67-45

HAMPTON, VA. (www.howard-bison.com) – January 28 – In spite of Howard University suffering its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss of the season to its Achilles' heel, the Lady Pirates of Hampton University 67-45 on Monday, Jan. 28 in Hampton, Va., two Lady Bison tallied double-doubles, including Cheyenne Curley-Payne's first double-double of the 2012-13 campaign.

In the loss, Curley-Payne led the mighty blue and white in four categories: points (14), rebounds (12), assists (5) and steals (3).  With her eighth double-double, senior Saadia Doyle scored 10 points and pulled down 10 boards, while sophomore Cheyenne Brown tallied a season-high seven points.

Collectively, Howard shot 33 percent from the field (18-55), nine percent from behind the arc (1-11) and 57 percent from the charity stripe (8-14).

Howard took off with a problematical start, as Doyle was hit with two fouls in the first two minutes of the night.

By the 18:40 mark, Hampton took a 5-0 lead, nonetheless a 7-2 Howard run notched the only tie of the night.

With Lady Pirates' aggressive fans on their side, Hampton went on a 13-0 run over five minutes of play.  Hampton's Olivia Allen gave Howard the most difficulty, shooting 4-of-6 from three point range.

Curley-Payne snapped the scoring draught at the 7:06 with a layup and single free-throw, thanks to a Hampton foul.

Over the last seven minutes of the first half, Howard and Hampton went 11-to-15 in terms of scoring.

By the half, Howard was at a 17-point margin deficit with a score of 40-23.

In the final two minutes of play, Hampton extended its lead to a 20-point plus margin lead.

Regrettably, Howard couldn't break through the deep deficit and concluded the night with 67-45 loss.

Howard drops to 11-8 overall, 5-2 in the MEAC and 6-7 on the road.

HU will host the next four contests, welcoming Savannah State (Saturday, Feb. 2), South Carolina State (Monday, Feb. 4), Maryland Eastern Shore (Saturday, Feb. 9), and Morgan State (Monday, Feb. 11).
