Howard v. Bowie State

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – November 23 – In their first home game of the season, the Howard University women's basketball team revived its offense after a fruitless first-half performance to secure a 60-38 win against the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University in Burr Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 23.

Senior Saadia Doyle, who tallied six points on the first half of action, finished with a team-high 29 points, while fellow classmate Cheyenne Curley-Payne gathered 11 points and redshirt-junior Jerelle Gorham attained 10 points.  Senior Nicole Deterville amassed a season-high 10 points, as Doyle collected eight boards.  Curley-Payne circulated nine assists and two steals.

Collectively, the Lady Bison finished at 64 percent from the charity stripe, 35 percent from the field and 18 percent from long range.

In their first contest in Burr Gymnasium, the mighty blue and white opened the contest with 16-4 lead by the 9:39 mark. But as the HU offense cooled, Bowie State scoring leader Brooke Miles paced her Lady Bulldogs on a 13-2 run, turning a 13-point deficit to a 20-20 tie after the first 20-minutes of play.

Howard fell short in all areas of scoring, shooting below 27 percent in field goals, free throws and three-pointers, including a season-low 17 percent from the free-throw line off of a 1-of-6 outing and only sinking three long range shots off of 13 attempts.

Nonetheless, HU utilized the halftime intermission to revive its offense and double its first total, overpowering BSU 40-18 in the second half alone.

On a short 5-4 run, the Lady Bulldogs attained its first and only lead of the night with a score of 25-24.

By the 9:21 mark, the Lady Bison regained a double-figure lead with a score of 38-28.

Howard continued toward the winners circle with an 18-7 run, with 11 off those points coming from the free-throw line.

The Lady Bison held BSU to 22-point deficit for a 60-38 victory.

HU continues its three-game homestead with a Sunday, Nov. 25 contest against Mount St. Mary's; tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m.  Sunday marks the first doubleheader of the season, as the men's team takes on Wilmington (Del.) at 2:00 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium.
