The second day of competition proved to bring more success to the Howard University Swimming and Diving teams. With more season and career best swims, the Bison have put themselves in position to replicate a feat that is very rare in the sport by achieving all season-best times.
The evening began with the Bison earning a trip to the medal stand. The men's 200 medley relay set a new standard in Bison Swimming and Diving with bronze medal performances turned in by sophomore Zadok Isaacs (Cantaro Village, Trinidad and Tobago,) freshman Darell Hungerford (Clinton, MD,) junior Steven Lott (Los Angeles, CA,) and senior Damjan Strbac (Zagreb, Croatia.) with a time of 1:36.45.
Hungerford continued his powerful evening with the men's team highest finish thus far in the competition. The freshmen's 100 breaststroke time of 59.36 was a career-best and put him in position to swim in the evening finals for seventh place. Isaacs, too, found his way to the championship finals heat in the 100 butterfly. In the preliminary round, the sophomore set a personal best time of 52.43. At night, Isaacs set his career-best standard even higher with an eighth place finish at a time of 51.91. Later in the evening, Isaacs capped his three tremendous swims with another personal best time. Seeded 11th, Isaacs stormed to the front of the field with a time of 53.34, a new high mark for the program, and captured the consolation heat with a ninth place finish.
Lott was outstanding in the 100 butterfly, as well. His new career-best mark of 53.99 bumped him two spots into 11th place. Strbac also set a new season best mark in the 200 freestyle. His time of 1:46.83 put him in the consolation final and earned him 13th place. Junior Kelvin Goodman (Berkeley, CA) also chipped-in individual points. His season-best time of 1:03.05 was strong enough for 15th place.
Goodman was joined by seniors Omar McKenzie (Nassau, Bahamas) and Justin Morrison (Collier, TN) along with sophomore Darien Washington (Detroit, MI) to swim the Bison's season-best time in the 800 freestyle relay. Their final time of 7:58.30 was good for fifth place.
On the women's side, Chelsea Andrews (Glenside, PA) set two new school records to highlight the memorable Lady Bison performances. In the preliminary round, Andrews fired a 59.09 in the 100 butterfly, which finished her in a tie for 20th place. To conclude the evening, Andrews lead-off the women's 800 freestyle relay and set a new benchmark for the 200 freestyle with her time of 1:56.72.
Andrews was also part of the Lady Bison's highest relay finish, thus far, in the championships. To begin the evening, Andrews joined junior Cachanda Evans (Plainfield, NJ,) and freshmen Janai Ederaine (Corona, CA) and Ashley Douglas (Missouri City, TX) to swim in the 200 medley relay with a new best time of 1:52.49, good for eighth place. Andrews' lead-off leg in the 800 freestyle relay was then finished by fellow sophomores E'lan Brewer (Lansing, MI) and Summer Davis (Laverock, PA) and anchored by freshman Nandi Ross (Capital Heights, MD) for a season-best mark of 8:18.29 and a 10th place finish.
The Bison will conclude the conference championship action later today.
