WASHINGTON, D.C. - Calvin Thompson
scored a team-high 11 points and Howard University showed its team
depth in a 64-47 victory over Marymount in a men's exhibition
basketball game at Burr Gymnasium.
Thompson, a 6-3 sophomore guard, who missed most of the second
of the season last year, connected on 4-of-7 from the field in 20
minutes of play. But there were several others who
contributed as 10 different players scored.
The Bison jumped out early and took a 39-23 lead at the
half. Freshmen Anton Dickerson (eight points, three
assists) and Mike Phillips (eight points, six rebounds) and
seniors Curtis White (eight points) and Paul Kirkpatrick (six
points, five rebounds) led the way.
Howard began to use its bench liberally and got production from
junior Adam Walker (eight points, six rebounds) and freshmen Tyreak
Johnson (five points) and Gary Lawrence (five points).
Division III Marymount was able to fight its way back in the
game in the second half when the Bison went cold. Patrick
Prewitt and Chapman Canady led a run that cut the deficit to 11
with seven minutes remaining but Thompson nailed a 3-pointer and
short pull jumper during a 45-second span to up the margin back to
16.
Howard limited Marymount to 35 percent shooting and forced 24
turnovers.
The Bison open the 2009-10 season at the University of Indiana
next Saturday at 7 pm.
