Brandon Torrey

Brandon Torrey returns to his alma mater and the place of his first coaching job to begin the 2022 campaign as offensive line coach for the Bison.

Torrey began his coaching career after playing 6 years in the NFL in 2015 he served in a volunteer capacity at Howard. And then in 2016 he took the reigns as the offensive line coach for the Bison.  During his tenure, the Howard offensive line blocked effectively to produce the school’s first 1,000-yard tailback in over a decade, and set a school single-game record for rushing yards that season.

Torrey coached the tight ends at Monroe Junior College in New York from 2017-18, where he produced two All-American players.  He also helped coach the Mustangs’ special teams, leading the kickoff return unit to a number 2 ranking in the country in 2018.

Torrey accepted the offensive line coaching job at Norfolk State University in 2019.  In his first year he produced three All-Conference players on the offensive line.  Later under his charge he helped NSU set a new school single-season Division I scoring record, averaging 28.9 points overall and 31.8 in MEAC play.  The Spartans also averaged a season high, 144.7 rushing yards per game, the third-best mark in the MEAC and the most by a Spartan team since 2011.  That included three games with 200+ yards on the ground and a season high of 272 at Howard – the most rushing yards in a single game by a Spartan team since 2010.  In 2021 Torrey’s group accomplished a list of things under his charge to include: developing 4 first-team All-Conference players with only 2 returning starters from the previous season, producing for only the second time in school history an All-American offensive lineman, as well as generating the MEAC lineman of the year and a group that blocked for the longest rushing touchdown in school history.

During his years in a Bison uniform, from 2001-2004, Torrey was a First Team All-MEAC selection for 3 consecutive years, Second Team All-American, and recognized as one of the top 10 guards in the nation in Division IAA.  In 2004, Torrey was named Metropolitan Player of the Year by the Pig Skin Club and was chosen to represent Howard in the inaugural HBCU All-Star Classic.

Before moving to the coaching ranks, Torrey played six years of professional football, to include stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals.  He was also a member of the XLII Super Bowl champion Giants team that defeated the unbeaten New England Patriots.

Torrey is a native of Durham, North Carolina and returned to Howard in 2015 to earn his bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
