WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) - Howard University quarterback Jamie Cunningham has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 30-29 come-from-behind win over Morehouse College in the Second Annual AT&T Nation's Football Classic at RFK Stadium on Sept. 1.
The 6-4, 205-pound freshman from Greensboro, N.C., came off the bench in the fourth quarter to rally the Bison to victory. First, he engineered an 89-yard drive that gave his team the brief lead at 23-22. After Morehouse scored on a 72-yard TD on the ensuing possession to regain the lead at 29-23, Cunningham was faced with the challenge of having to rally his team again with less than two minutes remaining and no timeouts.
Playing in his first action as a collegian, Cunningham calmly put together the game-winning drive, culminating it with a 13-yard TD pass to tight end David Wilson with 22 seconds remaining to give Howard the season-opening victory.
For his accomplishment, Cunningham was named the game's MVP.
Offensive lineman Malcolm Carter, defensive back Julien David and running back Aquanius Freeman were all cited on the MEAC honorable mention list for their contributions in the victory.
